Birmingham Asian Culture & Food Festival 2012
March 31, 2012 (10:30-4:00)
The 2012 Birmingham Asian Cultures & Food Festival is an annual fundraising event for the Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation. It features food, fun, an Asian bazaar, and educational events appropriate for the whole family.
This year one highlight of the Festival is the appearance of the Dragon Art Studio rod puppeteers. Winners of the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, these performers will delight all of the children present (no matter what age you are). Also, for the children, an opportunity to join the Children's Chorus in the opening ceremony, and visit "Verna, the Happy Dragon" moonwalk, who wishes everyone "Happy New Year of the Dragon".
There will also be dancers, singers, musicians, and demonstrations of a stress reducing martial arts form. For those seeking enlightenment, there will be hands-on workshops highlighting Japan - sharing knowledge about bonsai, origami, and ikebana. The Sales Bazaar is always a hit - with a wide range of Asian items from hand-embroidered silk on silk pictures, to Asian cook books, to hand-painted umbrellas, to dolls and tea sets. Browsers are welcome. Back also is the colorful and beautiful Asian fashion show, much admired by the photographers in the crowd. And, of course the food! Again, we invite you to sample a little of everything from the seven Asian cuisines offered. While enjoying all of this, please take the opportunity to become friends with someone from another culture and enrich you own life by learning about theirs.
