The Arabesque Vietnam Dance Company Performs The Mist, Coming to The Wright Fine Arts Center at Samford University, November 3, 2014
The Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation, in partnership with The Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts Center, will host the Arabesque Vietnam Dance Company in Birmingham for a one night only performance on November 3, 2014. Based in Saigon, Vietnam, this first private neo-classical and contemporary dance company will perform an original work, entitled The Mist, which will draw on Vietnam’s rich history and culture, incorporating contemporary forms and techniques, including ballet, from East and West. Making its U.S. debut as part of Center Stage, a public diplomacy initiative of the U. S. Department of State in a public-private partnership with the New England Foundation for the Arts, Arabesque will only perform in five U.S. cities: Birmingham, Houston, San Diego, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center. This U.S. tour is dedicated solely to the promotion of greater cultural and artistic awareness, understanding and cooperation between the people of the United States and Vietnam. The nonprofit Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation is honored to have secured one of only five performance venues in the United States for this outstanding international touring company from Vietnam.
Led by their internationally recognized and honored choreographer and Director, Nguyen Tan Loc, the Company has performed in Singapore (2009), in London, England (2010), Australia and Japan, winning major dance and choreography awards at the International Dance Competition in Seoul, Korea in 2011 & 2012.
The Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation wishes proudly to acknowledge financial and logistical support from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mayor’s Office - City of Birmingham, the Daniel Foundation of Alabama, Alabama Power Company/Southern Companies, and an anonymous donor who is sponsoring the post-performance “Meet the Artist” dessert reception. We also wish to recognize the generous contributions made through our partnership with the Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts Center at Samford University, and Center Stage, representing the U.S. Department of State. The support and cooperation from Sean Wright, Wright Center Executive Director, and Deidre Valente, General Manager of Center State, are much appreciated.
